Sandy Senn does not support the gas tax in its current form. We collect the lions share of the tax in Charleston County, then send it to Columbia where it gets distributed to all of the counties. The formula used for distribution is not based on road usage and our Lowcountry roads are the most heavily traveled. The formula for distributing any gas tax, should we need one, must be changed so that the counties which have the most road usage should have a larger share.
Mrs. Senn would also support a legislative change which would allow a local option gas tax. This would be the same as a local option sales tax, but the money would stay here in the Lowcountry. In order for the local option gas tax to be enacted, it must be placed on a referendum. This would allow citizens to vote on whether the tax is appropriate.
